A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
